rising bond yields are not always a sign of strength. most people see yields go up and immediately think “strong currency.” it is more sophisticated than that.
when yields rise it often means investors are demanding higher compensation to hold government debt. why? because they are afraid inflation will erode the real value of their returns. so the yield has to be high enough to offset inflation and still deliver a profit. fear is the real signal.
and it gets more complicated. higher yields mean the government pays more to refinance its existing debt. that increases the fiscal burden, widens the deficit, and can weaken the trade balance over time as more money flows out to service that debt.
so rising yields can simultaneously signal inflation fears, fiscal stress and deteriorating fundamentals, none of which are straightforwardly bullish for a currency.
context always matters.
