Grateful to @MNCN_Col for granting me access to the last surviving specimen (from 1857!) of the famously extinct snakes from the tiny Columbretes islands. Excited to recover aDNA & study evolution in this harsh climate. Big thanks to @BolinCentre for the RT4 seed money! 🐍 #aDNA

New paper out! 🐈 What were cats’ lives like before mummification in ancient Egypt? Our study of skulls from Beni Hassan reveals evidence of disease, injuries and life in captivity in both domestic and jungle cats. https://t.co/q7vSIZG1KA @ERC_Research

🚨 Ancient DNA Alert 🚨

Do you depend on BWA aln, and worry that the world’s HPC clusters are pivoting towards GPUs?

Fear no more!

We here present G-ALN, a GPU implementation that is >6 times faster and produces byte-identical outputs to BWA aln!

From previous data—albeit limited—there is no clear indication that North African ancestry disappears or diminishes during the ‘Reconquista.’ It is only much later sociopolitical events—not military feats (100–400 years later, depending on the region)—that dilute this ancestry.

[Lethe scholar @Lethescholar]

QT: On the new study of ancient DNA from Iberia:
>Barbarian migrations had a greater impact than previous studies suggested.
>Eastern Medit. & African ancestry arrived in Roman times and disappeared during the Reconquista (already known).
>As usual, not a single Galician sample.

One could be excused for thinking they’ve developed some kind of allergy to the possibility of, even remotely, discussing previously published shotgun data—let alone using it. Jupiter forbid.

New insights into the population genomic history of the Iberian peninsula by Pablo Carrión! Turns out 80+% of Roman-period individuals in Spain carried ancestry from Eastern Mediterranean (particularly the Western Anatolian coast). https://t.co/8BmJi87BMz

New paper from @Uyuhala analyzes ancient (~17kya) salmon DNA 🐟 from Spain
Ancient Iberian Salmon were genetically closer to modern Northern European Salmon than to modern Spanish Salmon
IIRC Other taxa show the same pattern of northern varieties in the south during the LGM

David massively revised his preprint. Check out the new version!
Some highlights are more evidence for why range expansion specifically works better than an admixture pulse and what genes may have been inherited from the expanding "mode 3" population

This is now published in @MolBioEvol, and includes not only very interesting inference of selection in Neolithic Europe, but also nice benchmarking of various local ancestry inference tools

Fst is a key genetic differentiation metric, but it emphasizes common variants over rare.

In @ieeeICASSP out now @geletavc introduces Fq, which can be tuned across the allele freq spectrum.

Fst & Shannon differentiation fall out of it as special cases.

Eastern domesticated grapevines founded Iberian viticulture around 1,000 BCE.

Ancient DNA recovered from the oldest seeds with domesticated-like morphology (from ∼1,000 BCE), found in southwestern Spain, revealed nuclear and chloroplast genome signatures of Eastern Mediterranean cultivars.
