But the Indonesian & Malay word for stingray “Pari”, maybe derived from older Austronesian language cousin that sounds like “Pagi” like modern Tagalog.

My Malay grandmother has an accent that pronounce “r” sound as “gh” sound..

She will say “ikan pari”
(ikan= fish, pari= stingray)

And it sounds like “ikan paghi”

So I guess there was a sound change from G → R somewhere long ago.
