This is a common charge laid by unionist apologists against Scotland. So let's answer it.

The nation state of Scotland, pre-1707, had very successful and much respected trading colonies in Europe, along the North Sea Coast, in the Hanseatic towns and along the Baltic ( in the Netherlands, Poland, Germany, the Baltic States and Sweden. Scotland also had a strong trade and military presence in Russia). It created out of them the first trade embassies. Scotland's efforts in Darien were not the settler colonies and plantations of its imperialist English neighbour, but rather a trading colony identically modelled on the successful and peaceful European ones.

Scotland's role in the Anglo-British Empire was precisely the same as the role of all victims of imperialism - extend the coloniser's dominions. Daniel Defoe bragged about England's intentions in public in 1706 (reference available). The English used the Welsh in their pre-1707 colonising attempts on Scotland. The Anglo-British used the Irish identically to the Scots in their insatiable hunger for Empire. Just as they use 300,000 colonised Indians to colonise East Africa.
