To be fair, Jesus was a practicing Jew who believed in upholding the traditions of the Torah. But he also believed he was the prophet prophesized in the Torah, and he believed the kingdom of god was coming to earth in his lifetime. Therefore, he took the Torah teachings one step further and cautioned against showing any anger, violence, aggression, etc., for fear of jeopardizing one's standing prior to the arrival of god's kingdom. Obviously, god's kingdom did not come to earth in his lifetime, and upon hearing of John the Baptist's gruesome death, I think he started to understand that the road ahead was not to be an easy one for him.
