More income at home. Higher expectations for the kids.
It's a repeated finding: parents with more income and more education tend to have higher academic expectations for their child.
Do such expectations become self-fulfilling prophecies? Or a realistic read of reality?
One step closer to finally figuring out what 'X' actually equals π¬
Learning is supposed to be fun, just like @efteling , and we're here to prove it!
Reach out to book a trial lesson and see how much your teen can enjoy the process.

@flowidealism I work mostly with ages 14-18.
Some were great, some lacked determination. Well, we canβt expect uniform results. I do see great value in the Montessori approach.
Less money at home. Students having higher expectations of themselves. Kinda backwards from what we're used to in the West.
But a study in China found exactly that: kids from lower income homes expect more from themselves, academically.
Loved discovering this one.

How do you think AI is affecting learning?
New technologies arrive with new fears. Some justified, some less.
My #1 rule for using AI is the same rule for learning with a teacher: Keep the heavy lifting to yourself.
When someone/something helps you too much, you don't grow your muscles.

Are smartphones and social media the culprits?
Whatever it is, small steps of focus training bring big gains. Spice it up with some accountability for best results!
Report by the excellent @TheEconomist .
@BillAckman Should Betty Rosa really be ashamed?
I fully agree with Billβs point. Yet this does not mean she has malevolent motives. releasing such data rewards achievement but could also hinder challenged schools from improving.
I have learned a lot from my students over the years.
Here is one of my favorite quotes from a student.
Does your teen show up at the last minute for lessons?
For 1:1 sessions, a short βIβm waiting for youβ message from the teacher can go a long way.
"He loves his teacher. He finds the lessons fun."
That student failed at the next exam.
Lessons should absolutely not be boring. They must be interactive, engaging, intriguing, fulfilling. Fun, too, but not instead of real learning.
@FixingEducation Probably true but looking only at averages doesnβt show the whole picture.
Iβd suspect that a good portion of the most brilliant pupils are still βmade in the USAβ
Last day to apply!
Junior Developer, Gamified Learning Products (Contract)
Yeda is a premium 1:1 online math tutoring company for teens. Every student has their own board where their work lives. We're turning that board into something they actually want to open: upload a photo of the problem you just worked through, get a response, earn something for it, show it off.
Streaks, rewards, recognition, a practice timer that pays off. The mechanics you already know from the apps on your phone, applied to a fifteen year old finally getting a topic they thought they were bad at.
We're a small team. No office, no bureaucracy, and you'll see what you build land with real students within weeks.
What you'll build
Small, scoped features on top of the tools we already run (Miro boards, https://t.co/0Qr7Iv6ZF1): photo upload, achievements, progression, timers. We write the specs. You build it well and tell us when we've specified something that won't feel good to use.
Background & skills
Junior level (0-2 years professional, or strong personal and side projects)
Comfortable writing, testing, and maintaining scripts independently
API integration experience: documented REST APIs, JSON, basic auth
Comfortable in an IDE, using GitHub
Able to work from a written spec without needing everything re-explained
Nice to have
You've built something with points, levels, streaks, or rewards in it, at any scale, including for fun
Basic CI/CD familiarity (GitHub Actions or similar)
Worth knowing
This is web and API work inside existing tools, not game-engine development. If your background is Unity or Unreal, the game instincts are welcome, but the day-to-day is integrations and scripts.
Specs come from us. We're not asking you to own product direction, but we do want your instinct on what makes a mechanic land, and we'll ask for it.
Structure
Contract, project-based. Short paid test task first: a small scoped build, plus one mechanic you'd propose and why. Longer engagement after that.
Location & pay
Remote, Serbia-based. $15-22/hr.

@NicholasFerroni@nypost They blame the unions, not the teachers themselves, thereβs a difference.
I otherwise agree with your overall point. Student agency is important.
