Any practice an original Hermetist was engaged in was for the purpose of integrating the fragmented parts of the soul, thus clearing the way for an intimate bond with God.

That the general doctrine for every popular Christian denomination is exoteric in character, the open embrace of philosophy and astrology as well as theurgy would naturally have been seen as “occult” to those coming from a world view where such ideas were legally forbidden.

The reason why hermetic literature has been mischaracterized as occultism is because the writers who preserved it from the medieval period forward came from Christian backgrounds, and that is how they perceived it in contrast to their native religion.

And all actuality, Hermetism is a religion, with esoteric ideas at the core of its doctrine.
