What Will Happen to Earth in 50 Years?

Like every other species, humanity has its preferred habitat. By 2070, that habitat could shrink dramatically—leaving billions of people outside the climatic conditions they’ve always known as livable.

Without sharp cuts in CO₂ emissions, up to 3.5 billion people could find themselves living in zones that are essentially uninhabitable by today’s standards.

Scientists have found that the vast majority of human settlements cluster in a surprisingly narrow band: places where the average annual temperature sits between 11°C and 15°C. They call this the “human climate niche”—our ecological sweet spot.

Now the math is getting ugly. The share of Earth’s land surface that experiences average annual temperatures above 29°C—the same searing heat that defines the Sahara Desert—is projected to explode from just 0.8% today to nearly 19% by 2070.

Vast stretches of South America, India, Africa, northern Australia, and Southeast Asia could become practically unlivable. Not “a bit hotter.” Not “uncomfortable summers.” Functionally hostile to the way human life has always been organized.

Fifty years isn’t a distant future. It’s within the lifetime of most people alive today.
