Day Two of the Mashonaland East media tour commenced at Prospect Lithium Mine in Goromonzi, where Hon. Minister of Mines and Mining Development, Eng. Dr. Polite Kambamura, Hon. Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Itayi Ndudzo, and the Permanent Secretary for Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, @nickmangwana, undertook a tour of the mine's processing plant. Prospect Lithium Zimbabwe (PLZ) was acquired by Huayou Cobalt in April 2022 under the Government’s “Open for Business” policy.

The operations at Prospect Lithium Zimbabwe currently generate 2,000 direct and 2,000 indirect jobs. Annual foreign exchange earnings from PLZ and ATZ are expected to exceed US$800 million from year 2026. In the first half of 2026, PLZ contributed over US$60 million in taxation. Huayou Cobalt has also pledged two internationally accredited national laboratories and signed a skills development agreement with Ningbo Polytechnic in May 2026.

Mthokozisi Goliath, Mine Manager at Prospect Lithium Zimbabwe, explained that the Lithium Sulphate Plant integrates pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical processes, with a production capacity of 50,000 tonnes per annum. The plant operates through three production lines. The process begins with roasting for alpha to beta spodumene conversion, followed by leaching, counter-current decantation, filtration, evaporation, and final product concentration, a streamlined process ensuring efficient lithium sulphate output.

Hon. Eng. Dr. Polite Kambamura emphasized that Zimbabwe has successfully established Africa’s first lithium‑sulphate plant, with a capacity of 50,000 tonnes per annum, currently operating at 60% and set to reach full capacity by 2027. He noted government plans to complete a lithium‑carbonate plant by August 2026, advancing towards local battery and solar panel production. He commended Huayou Cobalt and other producers for honoring commitments after the export ban, including building laboratories, transferring skills, training workers, and ensuring compliance, underscoring that government will leave no stone unturned in maximizing national benefit from lithium resources.
