MULTI-AGENCY TEAM MOVES TO ENFORCE CLOSURE OF KIAMAIKO SLAUGHTER HOUSES

Today, a meeting @NemaKenya involving multiple agencies has initiated enforcement of closure of Kiamako slaughterhouses. This action follows a court order issued on July 28, 2022, which mandates the cessation of operations at these facilities.

In compliance with this court order, the multiagency team agreed to withdraw all the Government services offered to Kiamaiko Slaughter Houses especially, the Veterinary Services of meat inspection, public health services, and issuance of Single business permits offered by the Nairobi City County and the services offered by the Nairobi water and sewerage company.

This will paralyze the entire slaughtering of goats at the slaughter slab due to illegality of current operations.
The decision to enforce closure stems from longstanding concerns regarding the handling of blood and offal, as well as the improper treatment of wastewater discharge, as outlined in the Water Quality Regulations of 2006.

Despite ongoing negotiations dating back to 2013, which aimed to facilitate the relocation of operations to a licensed site by March 31, 2022 in Njiru, Nairobi-they have not yet complied with this.

It is essential to clarify that the intention behind these enforcement measures is not to impede the legitimate trade of meat or the operation of butcheries. Rather, the focus is squarely on addressing the specific deficiencies observed within the slaughterhouse facilities themselves which degrade the environment.

By taking decisive action in this regard, the multi-agency team seeks to uphold environmental and health standards while ensuring the welfare of both consumers and the broader community.

Principal Secretaries Eng. Festus K Ng'eno (Environment and Climate Change) and Mr Gitonga Mugambi (Forestry) today attended the technical identification mission meeting of Kenya Watersheds Services Improvement Programme (KEWASIP) at a Nairobi hotel.

KEWASIP is a 10 years US $ 200 million programme funded by the World Bank with an additional support of US $ 38 m from the Climate Investment Fund (CIF). The overall objective of the project is to restore degraded landscapes and improve watersheds services for climate change resilience and improved livelihoods.

The programme will be implemented in Mt Kenya and Mau Forest ecosystems and is expected to strengthen capacity of national, county and local institutions to sustainably manage watersheds, restore degraded watersheds and promote sustainable land management practices for increased land productivity.

The scoping mission was attended by members of the World Bank led by Mr Ragini Dalal, Assistant World Bank Country Director and representatives of Principal Secretaries in the state departments of Agriculture, ASALs, Irrigation and Wildlife, Chief Conservator of Forests Mr Alex Lemarkoko, Water Resources Authority CEO Mr Mohamed Shurie, NETFUND CEO Mr Samson Toniok, Kenya Water Towers Agency, Director General, Prof Julius Tanui among other dignitaries. The Director General, NEMA was represented by Mr. Wilfred Osumo, the Authority's lead team member in the project implementation and Ms. Caroline Muriuki.
