I have a question. Will we ever morally evolve as a people enough to recognize that government killings of conscious, imaginative human beings are in fact, CRUEL punishment? Even more, that they are the practice of TORTURE. https://t.co/QvQo21SLqM
Congratulations, New Mexico! Yesterday, Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham signed into law a bill that abolishes life without parole sentences for children and creates meaningful parole opportunities. And today marks 14 years since New Mexico ended the death penalty on March 18, 2009.
Arizona executed Murray Hooper this morning. Prison staff struggled to set the lethal injection IV lines. They eventually had to cut into Murray’s thigh and insert a catheter into his femoral artery. An expert remarked that “lethal injection creates a circus of suffering.”
The US Supreme Court says that it’s unconstitutional to execute a person for a crime committed before they turned 18 years old. It’s an arbitrary exercise in line-drawing. Texas plans to execute Ramiro Gonzales on July 13th for a murder committed 71 days after his 18th birthday.
Oklahoma’s plan to execute 25 people over 29 months is reckless and wrong. Several people on the execution list are innocent, incompetent, or seriously mentally ill. All of them have human dignity that cannot be taken away. We must stand against this conveyer belt of killing.
Today, people buying groceries in a predominantly Black #Buffalo community were shot by a White man who believes the hate-filled propaganda that there’s a movement to replace White people.
White Supremacist Ideology + Hate + Irresponsible Fear Mongering + Guns = 10 people dead.
