NEW: SriLankan Airlines flight UL606 from Colombo to Sydney gets struck by lightning on departure from Colombo, causing damage to its left engine.
The Airbus A330-243 returned to the departure airport following the incident.
In a statement, the airline confirmed that the aircraft landed safely with 207 passengers and 16 crew members on board an hour later.

An ocean of energy opportunities reinforced in the Andaman Sea!
Very happy to report the presence of natural gas in Sri Vijayapuram-3 an exploratory well drilled by Oil India Ltd. 15 km off the east coast of the Andaman Islands at a water depth of 355 meters.
Initial production testing of the well at the depth of 1900 plus meters in the Eocene formation has established the presence of natural gas through continuous flaring.
Oil India is carrying out gas sampling to assess the composition & calorific value of gas and to carry out isotope studies to understand the genesis of the gas.
Under the Samudra Manthan Mission (National Deep Water Exploration Mission) announced by Hon’ble PM @narendramodi Ji on Independence Day 2025, large number of deepwater & Ultra deepwater exploration wells are planned in our offshore basins to fully exploit our hydrocarbon reserves.
Presence of hydrocarbon is now reported in 2(Two) wells out of 3 (Three) exploratory wells drilled by OIL in current exploratory campaign off Andaman Basin.
This presence of natural gas will help us in taking forward our exploration ambitions in coordination with global deepwater exploration experts like @petrobras, @TotalEnergies, @bp_india, @Shell, @exxonmobil and will be a significant milestone in our journey through Amrit Kaal!

The aviation industry’s engine shortage has become so severe that nearly 900 aircraft are now sitting on the ground worldwide.
Speaking this week, United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby said between 800 and 900 jets have been grounded because airlines cannot get enough engines and spare parts to keep them flying.
Even more concerning, Kirby warned the problem could continue for “many, many years.”
The biggest impact is coming from Pratt & Whitney’s GTF engine family, which powers hundreds of Airbus A220s, A320neos and Embraer E2 jets. Industry data previously showed around 835 GTF-powered aircraft were already in storage worldwide.
The shortage has become so extreme that some airlines have begun removing engines from relatively young aircraft to keep other jets operational.
For airlines desperate for capacity, the engine has become more valuable than the airplane attached to it.

WATCH: A Lufthansa Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner (D-ABPQ) sustained substantial damage after its nose landing gear collapsed while parked at the gate at Frankfurt Airport.
The incident led to the cancellation of today's LH450 to LAX service as airport and airline teams assess the extent of the damage. Video from the scene shows the aircraft resting on its nose after the front landing gear unexpectedly gave way while stationary.
No injuries have been reported, but a technical investigation into the cause of the collapse has been opened.
NEW: World's longest-range aircraft, the Airbus A350-1000ULR has taken to the skies for the first time, completing a three hour 43 minute flight at an altitude of 41,000 feet.
The A350-1000ULR is being developed for Qantas Airways to enable non-stop flights between Sydney and London for the first time ever - a distance of almost 10,000 nautical miles, with flight times of up to 22 hours. This is made possible primarily by the integration into the aircraft structure of an additional rear centre tank (RCT), enhancing further the aircraft performance and increasing the range of the aircraft by 1,000 nautical miles.
