🚨NEW VIDEO!
The tactical battle between PSG & Bayern Munich was fascinating, the rise of man to man marking at the heart of it and different ways to manipulate and exploit it!

Sometimes in football, when someone uses a tactical board, images, or graphics to explain an idea, some people immediately say it’s too fancy.
“Modern football.”
“Not real football.”
“Too far from the pitch.”
I don’t think it should be old school vs new school. 👇

“There is always a free man. Always. You know why? Because there is always the solution to give the ball to the goalkeeper. When the match begins, we are eleven against eleven, but when you have the ball, there are ten of you that want to take it, not eleven.”

⚽️ The modern game is man-to-man.
No teams epitomise that more than Vincent Kompany’s Bayern Munich and Luis Enrique’s PSG.
Below, I break down how elite sides exploit man-to-man marking.

So not only have they tried to copy & paste a concept as their own to 200k followers, but they also misinformed their audience with a false breakdown of the concept. Too funny man.
We are virtually living in the era of the 4-2-2-2 as we have seen the same IP (in-possession tactic being deployed by Kompany and a different form of it by Pep Guardiola on multiple occasions this season).
Let's understand what Fabregas' philosophy: it's all about CREATIVITY AND FREEDOM, with an emphasis on core principles rather than macro structures.
1. Building from the back
- When building from the back, it's important to engage the goalkeeper, especially during high opposition presses.
- It's always important that if the ball is with the LCB, the right-sided DM has to step back a little to form a triangle consisting of that defender and the pivot, turning into a progressive triangle, which helps to move forward the ball quickly from the centre. Vice versa when the ball is with the RCB.
- The full-backs have to be intelligent, and should have the ability to invert or move wider as per the opposition set-up, and the next point will explain the reason.
2. The attack phase
- Now, how do they get out from a high-press? Depending upon how the opposition presses, whether it's central or wide, the CBs can find outlets out wide to the full-backs (again, intelligence) or direct balls to the 10s, in high opposition presses, will find space. It's one of the two ways to escape the opposition front-line press, which is getting common nowadays.
- Then, if the opposition defenders get pulled out of position by the two 10s, the wingers can be in potential 1v1s with their respective marker, and can beat them or make blind-sided runs out-wide to get at the end of through balls from the midfield or long-balls from the back.
3. Conclusion and final thoughts
- The best thing about this system, we are not compromising on either offense or defense, the central overload creates a block for transitional phases, and the space in the offensive middle, gives the wingers and the 10s ample of space to wreck havoc.
Core principles around the way of playing have been mentioned in the last image. It's important to understand that Fabregas' IP plan is quite flexible while Kompany doesn't have an OOP structure with Bayern. This flexibility while giving freedom to the players is taking football away from the era where the emphasis was on macro-structures and accurate micro-movements, to an era where core principles with freedom and creativity will become the norm.

Timing is crucial in a Penetration Run.
At a young ages, we see players move before the ball possessor even looks up, so they occupy space too early and are unsuccessful.
The move should be executed when the ball possessor is looking up and ready to make the pass.
