As someone who covered the 1994 World Cup as a sportswriter, there was similar talk back in the day. Alas, it took 32 years to come to fruition. Hope you are correct, @JoePompliano!
I have been critical of FIFA and the way they distributed tickets for this World Cup. But the first week of this tournament has been a huge success, and they deserve credit for that. Stadiums are full, crowds have been great, and viewership is through the roof. The World Cup will be back in the U.S. before we know it.

32 years ago(!), I was a sportswriter covering the opening game of the World Cup at Soldier Field in Chicago. It was the start of the most amazing month of my career. I can report that I am not at Azteca in Mexico City for today's opening game. ๐ข
