I neither speak nor understand Arabic. I suspect @ChrisMinnsMP is in the same boat. When the rallies began, I wanted to understand precisely what intifada meant because it was being chanted. Was it an incitement? And an incitement to what exactly? Most of us became familiar with the word at the onset of the first Intefada which involved widespread civil disobedience. The 2nd Intefada was more violent - it involved suicide bombings.

It was fascinating to discover its actual meaning, in particular because of the widespread use of the metaphor across many languages and cultures as an inspiration for liberation: a shaking off of a yoke, a rising up against oppression. That resilience in the indomitable human quest for freedom from oppression.

The phenomenon is lionised in poetry, song and prose commemorating liberation across cultures that have had to shed oppression, and I hope a linguist out there is writing a paper on equivalent expressions in our indigenous languages that will capture for the sake of history and future generations of indigenous Australians, their ancestors’ struggle against the invasion of their world.

Is it by definition a violent ‘armed’ uprising? The answer is no, and ‘Globalise the Intefada’ is used by Palestinian activists to inspire what has indeed already happened - the world’s people have understood the necessity and urgency to speak up about liberation of the Palestinian people, they have indeed ‘risen up’ to demand their governments take meaningful action to stop the genocide, the ethnic cleansing, the occupation, the land theft, the oppression, the starvation, the killing of journalists, doctors, first responders, the targeted shooting of children, to impose sanctions on Israel, to stop supplying weaponry to Israel, to stop funding the genocide by buying arms and technology battle-tested on the Palestinian population. They have continued to rally every Sunday for 2 years, to ask for these things. The Intefada is indeed globalised. And the purpose is to stop this global Intefada.

They can ban every word in the Arabic language, but until they comprehend and address the root cause of terrorism, we are not resolving what has put us all at risk, and, due to the genocide conducted by Israel while purporting to represent all Jews, Jewish people in particular. Whilst the root cause is not dealt with, we will live in fear.

In trying to crush a broad based movement’s will to ‘rise up’ and oppose oppression @ChrisMinns is prepared to trash Australians’ democratic right to political expression, all for the sake of not addressing the root cause of terrorism and appeasing the Zionist Lobby.

Does anyone, anyone at all, genuinely believe peaceful anti genocide rallies have caused the terrorist attack. I doubt it. On the other hand, is this oppression likely to increase both antisemitism and contempt of our political leadership. We’re heading into a new year and dangerous uncharted territory.

I hate doing this, by the way. If it were up to me I'd have just let Australia grieve a horrific attack without spending days going "Actually this doesn't mean you get to take away our rights and silence Israel's critics." It's not my fault that the worst people in the world opportunistically seized on this moment to shove through pre-existing agendas aimed at stomping out criticism of Israel and quashing anti-genocide protests in my country.

I didn't ask for this. They did. They're the ones who made this political. It could have just been about two ISIS guys doing a terrible thing. They could have proved me wrong when I said the attack "will be used as an excuse to target pro-Palestine activists and further outlaw criticism of Israel in Australia." Everyone could have just focused on mourning the victims, and I would have looked like a jerk. Instead they proved me 100 percent correct, and I've had to spend all my time getting shrieked at by profoundly evil genocide apologists who are pretending to believe pro-Palestine protests caused the attack in order to promote the interests of a genocidal apartheid state.

Does it look like I enjoy this shit? Because I don't. I fucking hate it. And I hate that they're making it necessary for me to do, because the alternative to speaking out now is voluntarily losing my voice forever.
