We’re thrilled to welcome another baby to the family.

Tulambule Adult female of Nyakagezi gorilla group in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, On 12th September 2025 gave birth to a bouncing baby.

Tulambule was born on 1st Dec 2016 and the Mother to Tulambule is Cyizanye. Major identification features on Tulambule are 2 folds on her nose and the meaning of the name is a luganda word meaning "let's tour". Which was as a result of Tulambule being produced during the Tulambule campaign.

Exciting news from the Nkuringo gorilla group!
A newborn baby was spotted yesterday evening by the monitoring team, and it's believed that Kafupi, born in March 2015 is the mother. This is her first born.This increases the number from 13 to 14.
Our family is growing.

Exciting news!
Two baby mountain gorillas have been born @Bwindi Impenetrable NP.

KWITONDA of the Nkuringo family welcomed a new infant, increasing the group’s size to 16, while BIZULU of the Busingye family also gave birth, bringing her group’s total to 15 members. Both mothers and their newborns are healthy. These joyful additions highlight Uganda’s continued success as a global leader in gorilla conservation, made possible through strong community involvement and ongoing support.

During the #POATE2025 press conference, UWA’s Tourism Director, Mr. Masaba, emphasized Uganda’s rich wildlife resources and highlighted strategic investment opportunities. He mentioned developing a variety of accommodations, ranging from budget lodges to luxury resorts, as well as recreational facilities such as cruises on the River Nile, canopy walkways, and private lincenced animal parks. Additionally, he pointed out sustainable ventures including forestry projects, wildlife farming, and eco-tourism initiatives.

Here’s the story of the silverback gorilla at departures - RUHONDENZA 🦍 - The Gentle Giant of Bwindi.

Ruhondeza was the dominant silverback of the Mubare gorilla family - the first group to be habituated in Uganda in 1991 and opened for tourism in 1993. At the time, he was estimated to be between 28 and 32 years old. His name, Ruhondeza, means “one who loves sleeping,” a fitting reflection of his calm, gentle nature.

He led a group of 17 individuals with remarkable peace and stability. By the time he passed away on 27th June 2012, at around 50 years old, Ruhondeza had been seen by over 50,000 tourists. As the most photographed gorilla in Bwindi, he became a symbol of Uganda’s conservation success.

Unlike other gorillas, Ruhondeza spent his final days not deep in the forest, but near the village, surrounded by locals - an extraordinary gesture of trust and connection. His legacy lives on as a peaceful leader and a pioneer in Uganda’s gorilla tourism.

Let’s honour Ruhondeza’s legacy by protecting those who remain. Join the movement to conserve Uganda’s mountain gorillas, because one family saved is a future preserved.

Meet RAFIKI - the Silverback Gorilla at Arrivals (Entebbe international Airport)

Rafiki, whose name means “friend” in Swahili, was the dominant silverback of the Nkuringo gorilla family in the southern sector of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. Born in August 1995 to adult female Kasotora, Rafiki was first spotted by trackers in 1997, just as habituation of the Nkuringo family began.

He rose to leadership in 2003 following the death of the Nkuringo Safari Silverback. As a leader, Rafiki guided his group of 17 individuals with strength and a sense of calm authority - embodying the very meaning of his name.

Tragically, Rafiki’s life was cut short on 27th June 2020, when he was killed by suspected poachers. He was just 25 years old. His death marked a heartbreaking loss not only to his family but to Uganda’s conservation community and global wildlife lovers.

Today, his legacy lives on. His brother Rwamutwe now leads the Nkuringo gorilla family, which remains a stable group of 12 individuals. Rafiki’s last-born baby was named Rafiki Junior, a symbol of continuity and hope.

Let’s honour Rafiki’s legacy by committing to the conservation of mountain gorillas. Uganda is home to over 50% of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas, a treasure that can only thrive in the wild. Protecting them and their fragile habitat is not just important, it’s essential.

Every gorilla family we protect is a step toward safeguarding a species, and preserving a legacy for generations to come.
