Things are starting to get ugly in Hungary.
The new Prime Minister came to power denouncing his predecessor as an authoritarian. Yet after winning a democratic election and inheriting full executive authority, his focus is not on governing but on acquiring even more power.
For weeks, he and his allies have been pressuring the President to resign. No constitutional crisis. No legal accusation. No misconduct. Simply pressure to step aside.
The President has now made clear that he will not resign. The Prime Minister's response is to visit the presidential office tomorrow morning for what is being described as a "conversation."
Other constitutional officeholders are facing similar pressure. Their resignations are being openly demanded as well.
Meanwhile, governing seems to have taken a back seat. What the country is witnessing instead is a continuous political spectacle, of which this is merely the latest act.
The real test of democrats is not how they behave when they are out of power. It is how they behave once they have it.
