@Noahpinion@tszzl Not at all on the nativist side, but the USA has (well, maybe had) a uniquely strong dedication to classical liberal ideals. Our superpower is within ~3 generations we assimilate almost anyone to these ideals. But does that super power breakdown at some level of mass immigration?
@ArmandDoma@ChristinaPushaw Even without that the narrative is crazy. Having done a bunch of tech hiring my incentives have always been more in favor of hiring Americans. Easier logistically, cheaper - a lot of startups screen out H1Bs because it's such a headache.
The hallmarks of the hipster era: people were finding ways to
1. Spend time together IRL
2. Participate in aesthetic distinction
3. Innovate while re-energizing traditions
The decline of the hipster era is a loss. Craft is the antidote to slop.
@cremieuxrecueil@Noahpinion Depending on how fast this happens and if they really do take control of the feed, 2028 will be very interesting… we might see how much the CCP put their thumb on the scale.
@powerbottomdad1 You're comparing the bottom 25% of an over-subscribed major to ballers who were top 10% from ITT, Waterloo, etc.
(Yes H1B gets abused by a lot of sketchy companies - this purely a comment on FAANG hiring cracked H1Bs over the bottom deciles of US grads)
@Noahpinion Eh this is just non-comparable question wording. The first question implies boots on the ground, the latter makes it clear there's little risk to US troops.
@DanGrover How much fuzziness exists in those tasks? My naive view has been that these un-automated tasks are generally specific, except for the 5% where you have to improvise (tool isn't where it should be, steps have changed slightly over night, etc). And maybe LLMs can help with that 5%.
@TruueDiscipline All these takes were extremely reasonable except for this on. TikTok is almost certainly being used as a CCP psyop for destabilizing their enemies (us).
@SockDemFan@bearlyai@TrungTPhan They have to list that range because the law is they need to list salaries, which doesn't include stock (just cash). Netflix eng get to choose what their cash/stock breakdown is.
So the total comp is $920k (seems a touch low for 7+ EM), but can take 40k cash, rest 880k stock.
