There's a classic economics joke where one economist pays another $20 to eat a piece of shit.
They later see another piece of shit and the second economist then pays the first $20 to eat it.
The first economist says this was pointless as they've both eaten shit but neither is richer. "Not true", the second says, "We increased the GDP by $40!"
I think about that joke when I see people share this data claiming blue America is so much wealthier.
It's plausible blue America is genuinely richer, but at least some portion of the blue economy is the GDP equivalent of mutual shit-eating.
Red America is way more likely to have neighbors who each work on each other's houses or share childcare/homeschooling than Blue America. This doesn't show up on GDP, but hiring a professional would.
Just something to consider.
Rep. Michael Turner (R) says the reason he opposes requiring a warrant for FISA 702 surveillance of Americans is because “Hamas, Hezbollah, [the] Communist Chinese Party, [and] Al-Qaeda.”
This is an excellent reminder that foreign policy and other “emergencies” are always used to justify tyranny at home. If you're for a limited government, you must resist war.
Republicans who support the war state always support the surveillance state in turn. It all started with William F. Buckley, who said this in The Party and the Deep Blue (1952):
“We have got to accept Big Government for the duration — for neither an offensive nor a defensive war can be waged . . . except through the instrumentality of a totalitarian bureaucracy within our shores.”
War is the health of the state.
@DjsRichardson I absolutely disagree with this take. We need to shame incompetence out of society. Degrade bad people, elevate good people. “What’s good and bad” if the Supreme Court can say “I know when I see it” then I can too.
