THEY LAUGHED AT HIS BODY—THEN ASHTAVAKRA EXPOSED THEIR WISDOM
They called themselves learned men. They knew scriptures, arguments, philosophy, and sacred words. Yet the moment Ashtavakra entered King Janaka’s court, they saw his crooked body and laughed.
And in that single moment, their learning was exposed.
Ashtavakra called them cobblers—not merely to insult them, but to reveal the poverty of their perception. A cobbler examines leather; these scholars, despite all their knowledge, had looked no deeper than skin. They could recognize the shape of a body, but not the intelligence dwelling beyond appearance.
This is the disturbing difference between knowledge and wisdom. Knowledge can fill the mind while leaving perception untouched. One may know a thousand scriptures and still judge another human being by the body, clothing, status, beauty, age, or reputation.
The crookedness was visible in Ashtavakra’s body. But the deeper crookedness was hidden in the eyes of those who mocked him.
The ancient story survives in several retellings with essentially this same teaching: the court laughs at Ashtavakra’s physical form, and he compares the scholars to cobblers because they perceive only the skin rather than what lies within.
Source: Inspired by the traditional story of Ashtavakra in King Janaka’s court and the teaching of inner vision associated with Ashtavakra. The wording in the image is a modern retelling rather than a direct verse from the Ashtavakra Gita.
