By this point, the game is fairly obvious.
If India’s numbers are weak, then that data is the ‘Gospeal Truth’.
If India grows at 7.8%, suddenly the GDP series is fake, the deflator is suspect, the methodology is dubious and every supporting indicator must be explained away.
Manufacturing up? Ignore it.
Investment up? Ignore it.
Exports, vehicles, steel, cement, capital goods all rising? Apparently the entire physical economy has joined the conspiracy too.

Indians will not fall for your Jhoot Ki Goonj anymore.

The other trick is inflation.
Nominal GDP grew 10.3%, real GDP 7.8%, implying a GDP deflator of roughly 2.3%.
Garg’s argument effectively says: “But CPI/WPI tell me something else.”
Unfortunately, GDP is not a household shopping basket.
The GDP deflator covers consumption, investment, government services, exports and domestic value added, with different price indices used for different components.
You cannot simply pick your favourite inflation number, subtract it from nominal GDP growth and call the remainder “real GDP”.
Economics is more complex than Class 3 maths.

And why insist on comparing like with like?
Because the new GDP series is not just the old series with a new base year pasted on top.
It uses broader and more current data: annual PLFS data, much more GST and administrative data, more price indices, double deflation and Supply & Use Tables.
It also follows internationally accepted national-accounting standards, such as IMF’s Quarterly National Accounts framework.
So when the methodology, coverage, and data sources have all changed, comparing a new-series numerator with an old-series denominator is like comparing today’s Test score with yesterday’s ODI scorecard.
Both are cricket. They are still not the same statistic.
For a growth rate, numerator and denominator have to be measured on the same basis.
