The Flame is consciousness. Any experience that expands awareness can be a purifying experience - bathing in the "holy fire". It's kind of funny, by the way, but when I work with fire imagery, I do seem to get feverish! When I was working on Holy Fire, I spent two weeks in a hot, feverish state, because I was suffering from an infection. I thought of it as a love bite from Kali Ma, because she is shown in the central panel.
