My first dissertation chapter is out in mBio! We cultured a vertically transmitted endosymbiont, sequenced its genome, and showed that it is stably inherited across generation when injected into new hosts!
Intracellular endosymbiont is capable of axenic culture and can be stably inherited across host generations. #mBio@gpmaeda @NancyMoran15 https://t.co/X6wBaLvsv9
It turns out this symbiotic bacterium highly expresses a horizontally acquired NRPS operon, that results in production of a small molecule with antifungal properties. (3/3)
(the whole story is a bit more complicated):

How do insects fend off fungal pathogens, like cordyceps? Some aphids partner with symbiotic bacteria that provide protective effects, although how this actually works has been largely unknown...

Very excited to share the results of my second dissertation chapter - on the molecular mechanism of antifungal defense conferred by the aphid endosymbiont, Fukatsuia symbiotica! (2/3)
A few days left to apply.
We have an additional postdoc position opened to study #phytoplasma vector #insects all information about this position can be found here https://t.co/NOPZQQUFbt Please RT.
Fun collaboration with Diana Percy and Patrick Degnan showing rapid loss (<1M) of nutritional symbionts in Hawaiian psyllids is associated with galling behavior. All psyllids (free-living, open gall, closed gall) radiated on the same host plant species over ~5MY.

Axenic cultivation of vertically transmitted bacteria is pretty uncommon… These results have some fun implications for what experimental approaches can be applied that haven’t been possible in this system until now!
Please share!
