A @LeverhulmeTrust project based in the Classics and Ancient History department @warwickuni, exploring all aspects of the material culture of #GR_Festivals
As with coins, Roman #tokens are not exempt from production errors. The reverse of this token, kept at Bologna, shows traces of overstrike - with the flan slightly slipped away or hit a 2nd time. As a result, parts of Anubis’ body appear twice, generating a shifted effect.
four lead #tokens of the same type were found in a 3rd century #bath complex in #Ephesus - they show #Androklos, the founder of the city, spearing a boar. #numismatics. See Baier in Cityscapes and monuments of western Asia Minor for full details! :-)
Agonistic table on this Athenian #token token: owl on table, the whole framed by two branches, the most interesting detail: the countermark, as on many tokens related to @GR_Festivals@ancient_tokens@ASCSAthens
Crown decorated with a representation of the god Serapis, gold - Roman era, From the Douch treasure (Kharga oasis), Egyptian Museum in Cairo - after Egypte actualités & Marie Grillot
this #token@britishmuseum shows a Samnite style #gladiator, who fought with a rectangular shield and short sword. On the other side spectators applaud the spectacle. #numismatics
This AR #medallion shows the bust of Julian II (obv.) and Anubis with sistrum (?) and caduceus (rev.). The imagery is clearly borrowed from the ‘Festival of Isis’ #tokens issued in bronze and brass. Was this piece the product of a special issue or part of the Isis token issues?
For no particular reason. A hare jumps out of shell and its hunted by a cupid. Imagine the type of buyer who commissioned/selected this as their seal ring....
#Roman box-flue tiles were hidden, built into walls as conduits for hot air from a hypocaust. Most had simple comb marks to provide a key when mortaring or rendering them. This one has a lively pattern showing a #dog confronting a #stag - amazing, if it was never to be seen!
This wasn't what I went looking for in the database but worth sharing... "a victorious principal race-horse from a chariot team surrounded by jubilant supporters" (BM 1856,1226.479)
Fresco of Venus standing in the prow of a boat being drawn by four elephants, 1st century AD. From the House of Verecundus in #Pompeii.

Currently on display at the #exhibition “Pompeii And Santorini. Eternity In A Day” at the Scuderie Del Quirinale, #Rome.
A more relatable take on the classical stance of caryatids, which were used in place of columns as building supports. It brought to mind the caryatid from the Lesser Propylon at Eleusis, carrying on her head a large decorative basket.
The front row of seats in the Theatre of Dionysus, Athens, was reserved for different priests. Amongst other titles inscribed is the intriguing 'stone-bearer'. #Athens#Ancientfestivals
Venues for the Heraia and Nemean games at Argos - the theatre, where you can see the Roman additions very clearly, and the Odeion which had a mosaic showing a prize table in the orchestra. @GR_festivals, @classicswarwick
thanks to the @IATL_Warwick grant for pedagogic interventions, today I am starting a small project titled 'Imaging Hadrian in Britain' that will use 3D technology to study how the emperor was represented on different visual media in Britain. More to come....@ClassicsWarwick
