In reflecting on the semester as a whole, I am so happy to have taken this class this semester. I have learned so much more about my minor and have gained exposure to so many tools and methods that I cannot wait to utilize in other classes/future jobs!
With the importance of incorporating digital means of educating and storytelling in today's tech-heavy landscape, twine has become a new tool that I will surely be referring to in the future.
I more prefer writing to coding so working on the paper has been a nice break from coding. Being able to bounce between the two has helped me not get burnt out on a specific portion of the project.
Watching the videos has helped me in my understanding of the twine game and coding process but actually ironing out the details is where I am getting caught up.
I definitely was not able to get as much done for my twine game as I wanted to this week so I am getting a little bit nervous about creating the twine game and will be spending quite a bit of time on it over the break. #IDST270
In creating the plot for my game I'm playing around with different approaches to make it more user-friendly and easy to follow. I don't want it to come across as cut and dry, or almost harsh. So playing around with the flow of the game is my main focus right now. #IDST270
Getting feedback on my annotated bibliography was very helpful. Dr. Stover helped point me in a better direction in terms of the sources I was pulling and making sure they were more up to date. #IDST270
In Twine games general accessibility in both creation and distribution, marginalized communities are able to utilize the platform to share stories that have been traditionally left out of mainstream gaming culture.
I am not super familiar with gaming/gaming culture so the Harvey article was really interesting in explaining the relationship between twine games and queer culture.
What was shocking to me was the extent to which women and other marginalized communities are harassed within game studies. As someone who plans on going into academia for gender comm, it was definitely eye-opening to see the extent of backlash you can receive for your work.
The Satler & Blodgett reading very eye-opening today. It reminded me of a reading I had done previously for a gender comm class, titled "#CommSoWhite", as it touched on the struggle for marginalized voices to be heard in academia. #IDST270
The idea that video games can be used to engage in ideological discourse very much helps to create a space where digital humanities can grow as a field and gain more traction in academic institutions.
The database tutorials really helped clear up some confusion I had with some of the databases. I am super comfortable with EBSCO as a comm major but was not as comfortable with some of the other ones.
I've always been really interested in climate change and the impact we have had on our planet's wellbeing. For my twine game, I have decided to look at that impact as a comparison between personal v. corporate effects. #cnuidst270
The entire time I was going through the game I just kept feeling stuck, like there was nothing I could possibly do to make it out. I feel like this game does a really good job of provoking thought and commentary on the issue of poverty in the US
Playing Spent was an extremely stressful situation. I ended up finishing the month out with 19 dollars to my name and a very angry debt collector who would not leave me alone.
