Keeping people culturally safe, tiakitanga, cultural labour, is all labour. The skills and mana to be kaikÄranga, kaikÅrero, kaikarakia, to whakatau, to translate, to whakawhanaungatanga, should be compensated like any other skillset.
But also in a generic context, these payments are in recognition of a skill. Itās usually got some sort of aptitude assessment to get the payment. But any employer will offer bonuses for certain skills. Iāve seen American jobs offering an allowance for Spanish fluency
Former union organiser here. These payments exist for a couple of reasons. The first is because often MÄori are expected to undertake cultural duties without it being part of their job. These payments mean you can provide te ao MÄori support in house for cheaper than contracting
Iāve been in the workforce in a predominantly PÄkehÄ organisation for around 9 months. Iāve been asked to translate things despite it not being part of my job. There is demand for te reo MÄori and itās not going away. They just want to make sure we arenāt compensated for it
Alongside rolling back Te Tiriti and the visibility of out reo this govt is now blocking MÄori from being fairly compensated for our skillsets and disincentivising people from learning te reo MÄori
@nzsamueltaylor@nzherald 3. This language is condescending towards MÄori voters implying that they must have accidentally āforgottenā to support the Labour candidate rather than the reality which is employing strategic voting in the MÄori electorates (as we have always done)
So I have a google alert for mentions of mÄtauranga MÄori, which usually has beautiful gems of knowledge
But today Iāve been led to what looks like a book about regimes using science to justify their awful ideas (interesting!!) but then turns into an attack on IK and (contd)
Same with the adoption of te reo MÄori in various areas, which by the way some people in recent interviews have been talking you would think the English language was being banned and replaced
David Seymour just endured the media stand-up from hell in Christchurch.
It was hijacked by protestors with signs with explicit language, calling for climate action, a member of the public called him a āparasiteā & members of the public jumped in with their own questions.
