BIASED & MISLEADING: The concept of a Least Developed Country is a UN construct that is embraced and commonly used in development language, including by LDCs themselves.

Pointing out that Kenya (a lower middle income country) faces higher tariffs than our neighbours for exported goods is not a pejorative.

It simply points out that because we often pay a higher tariff than our neighbours do for the same export markets, our goods can cost more in foreign markets and may suffer lower demand, even if all other factors such as quality and supply are held constant.

Countries (like Kenya) at a lower middle income level therefore have incentive to correct the prices of their goods abroad by negotiating trade agreements that remove tariffs for our goods in that market. Primarily for goods that LDCs also produce.

That’s one of the reasons we negotiated the Kenya—EU Economic Partnership Agreement to get duty free terms in the 27 country, €13 trillion EU market.

But it’s not just about tariffs, such agreements also solve problems like excessive inspections and procedures and other issues that make it harder to export abroad.

For further context, LDCs are mostly to be found in the global South and have special development circumstances, and therefore they equally derive special considerations in trade, environment and development.

In WTO for example, many agreements are negotiated in ways that allow LDCs to exercise rights and benefits that the rest of the members don’t. This may include the right to fish more than others or the right to be excused from stringent global rules on other issues.

Pointing out the differential treatment that LDCs enjoy in export markets compared to lower middle income countries is therefore perfectly fine and no one gets offended.
