More cities are having a conversation about nighttime lighting and bird migration. Why Because most migratory birds fly at night.

Warblers, thrushes, sparrows, vireos, and other small birds take off after sunset and travel through the darkness. Cooler air helps them manage the heat generated by continuous flight. The atmosphere is often calmer. Most hawks and falcons are grounded.

The darkness is part of the system.

Artificial light interferes with it. Bright buildings, floodlights, glowing windows, parking lots, and the combined skyglow above cities can pull birds away from their routes from miles away.

Once drawn into a brightly lit area, birds may circle repeatedly, burning the fat they need to finish migration. They are also pulled down among buildings and reflective windows, where collisions become much more likely.

This is why cities across the country are adopting “Lights Out” programs during spring and fall migration.

I imagine no one reading this owns a sky scraper, but there are still things you can do.

Turn off outdoor lights when you go to bed. Close your curtains or blinds if a brightly lit room faces outside. Put porch and security lights on motion sensors instead of leaving them on all night. Aim outdoor fixtures downward, not into the trees or sky. Replace bright blue-white bulbs with dimmer, warmer ones.

Millions of birds may pass over your home during migration. Flipping one switch makes the sky a little safer.

8/7/26 The rain had delayed my arrival at The Battery . I saw Astoria immediately upon entering . I called to her to tell her to get out of the lawn as there was lightning ⚡️. She got out alright and flew to her tree at 6:45pm. #birdcpp 🦃❤️☔️ ⚡️
