Lying for “the greater good” / “the cause I care about” is the most corrosive behavior in play in the U.S. today. It explains much of the dysfunction on both the Right and Left.

There is not currently moral clarity that this is wrong. We need to fix that.

@MattPrinciple Trump did not play a passive role. The One Big Beautiful Budget is his — Republicans and the White House routinely called it “Trump’s One Big Beautiful Budget Bill”. It alone is responsible for 10% of the national debt. He was its champion.

@MattPrinciple If you promise something and make a best faith effort to fulfill that promise, but fail… maybe that’s okay.

But no one could possibly interpret Trump’s actions as a best faith effort to reduce the debt. He just lit money on fire over and over and over again. So yeah he owns it.

@MattPrinciple He got elected by promising he’d fix it, then offered zero leadership on the issue. He made it his responsibility, because he claimed it for himself.

If you said you’d fix it, and you didn’t, I’d say it was your fault, too.

@MattPrinciple I would say 1) this massive debt increase happened on his watch, and 2) his performance is a profound disappointment relative to what he promised. He didn’t come close to delivering, nor has he provided a blueprint for how to do it. That’s not what he said he’d do.

@MattPrinciple This is all true. But Trump knew this when he said he would “eliminate the debt”, in both campaigns.

I’m not holding him responsible for not eliminating it. But I am holding him responsible for, seemingly, not even trying at all. For not even heading in the right direction.

@MattPrinciple Congress is a constant. Trump is not. Not to mention, Trump has consistently proclaimed an ability to reduce the e debt that other presidents have not. These claims suggest it is fair to hold him to a higher, not lower, standard.

@speechboy71 My lukewarm take is that he thought he was making a joke — about Trump’s weird relationship with Natalie, not an affair — that insiders would get, and nobody else would. And it would never come up again.
