CHURCH FATHER: BEFORE ANTICHRIST, THE CHURCH WILL GROW WEAKER, AND HER VISIBLE SIGNS WILL DARKEN
St. Pope Gregory the Great’s “Moralia on Job” is a truly astounding work. Completed near the end of the 500’s, it was so penetrating in its mystical and spiritual analysis of Job that even St. Thomas Aquinas, in his own commentary, completely skipped the spiritual reading of Job, saying Gregory had done it so well “that nothing further need be added to this sort of commentary.”
In the Moralia, St. Pope Gregory the Great reads the story of Job (partly) eschatologically, and speaks multiple times about how the Church will be profoundly weakened before the arrival of Antichrist, but that this is ultimately to the benefit of the elect, and permitted by God to bring the reprobate into condemnation.
It’s a very humbling and eye-opening observation to read, for Gregory constantly sees in such things God opening highways of mercy and reward for the truly righteous, if only they refuse to be scandalized, which turns Catholics into heretics, schismatics, and apostates.
This is just one of several observations he makes on this front:
“While Holy Church appears more commonplace in this way, deprived of the power of signs, it happens both that the rewards of good people grow greater, because they venerate the Church in the hope of heaven and not because of the signs that she presents, and the minds of bad people are quickly shown to be against the church; they neglect the following of the invisible reality that she promises, because they are not impressed by visible signs.
Accordingly, since the humble faithful are deprived as it were of the multitude of manifest signs, the hidden plan holds a terrible trial, more generous in mercy for those who are good but heavier in righteous anger for those who are bad.
So before Leviathan [Antichrist] becomes manifest and conspicuous, in large part the signs of power in Holy Church cease, and we are told, ‘Poverty goes before his face’ (Job 41:13).”
St. Pope Gregory the Great, Moralia on Job (Book 34, §7)
Yes it does. Heaven is simply the Catholic Church Triumphant.
Extra Ecclesiam Nulla Salus.
That means there is no Salvation Outside the Church. Sadly, some of our brothers and sisters prone to Modernism and Sentimentalism are afraid to say this out loud but the Church has taught this since Pentecost (please see Acts 4).
Every mortal soul in Heaven gets there by being United to the Body (Ordinary Means - Sacraments) or the Soul (Extraordinary Means - Mysterious) of the Catholic Church which is itself the Mystical Body of Christ.
That means if someone makes it to Heaven they make it by being United either to the Body or Soul of the Church.
Pope Saint Pius X explains:
Q: CAN ONE BE SAVED OUTSIDE THE CATHOLIC, APOSTOLIC AND ROMAN CHURCH?
A: No, no one can be saved outside the Catholic, Apostolic Roman Church, just as no one could be saved from the flood outside the Ark of Noah, which was a figure of the Church.
Q: STATE DISTINCTLY WHAT IS NECESSARY TO BE A MEMBER OF THE CHURCH?
A: To be a member of the Church it is necessary to be baptized, to believe and profess the teaching of Jesus Christ, to participate in the same Sacraments, and to acknowledge the Pope and the other lawful pastors of the Church.
Q: TO BE SAVED, IS IT ENOUGH TO BE ANY SORT OF MEMBER OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH?
A: No, to be saved it is not enough to be any sort of member of the Catholic Church; it is necessary to be a living member.
Q: WHO ARE THE LIVING MEMBERS OF THE CHURCH?
A: The living members of the Church are the just, and the just alone, that is, those who are actually in the grace of God.
Q: AND WHO ARE THE DEAD MEMBERS?
A: The dead members of the Church are the faithful in mortal sin.
Q: BUT IF A MAN THROUGH NO FAULT OF HIS OWN IS OUTSIDE THE CHURCH, CAN HE BE SAVED?
A: If he is outside the Church through no fault of his, that is, if he is in good faith, and if he has received Baptism, or at least has the implicit desire of Baptism; and if, moreover, he sincerely seeks the truth and does God’s will as best he can such a man is indeed separated from the body of the Church, but is united to the soul of the Church and consequently is on the way of salvation.
Q: HOW, THEN, WERE THE PATRIARCHS OF OLD, THE PROPHETS, AND THE OTHER JUST MEN OF THE OLD TESTAMENT, SAVED?
A: The just of the Old Testament were saved in virtue of the faith they had in Christ to come, by means of which they spiritually belonged to the Church.

He wore camel hair. He ate locusts. He lived in the desert. And he was the most important man alive.
John the Baptist had one job: point to Jesus. He did it without apology, without a platform, without compromise. He told a king his sin was sin and lost his head for it.
He wasn't a diplomat. He wasn't a life coach. He was a prophet, the last of the old line, the first herald of the new.
The world is full of comfortable voices. John was a cry.
We don't need more noise. We need more voices willing to cry the truth in the wilderness, even when it costs everything.
Saint John the Baptist, pray for us!
Too many conservative Catholics let their understandable frustration over Pope Francis’s various problematic words and actions degenerate into disrespect for the person of the pope. And with some, this now seems to have evolved into a disrespect for the office of the papacy itself, which manifests in a knee-jerk “hermeneutics of suspicion” that is quick to put the worst spin on what Pope Leo says and does and freely to express criticism of him in a shockingly insolent manner. This is gravely sinful. While Pope Francis bears responsibility for damaging the prestige of the papal office, that gives no Catholic any excuse whatsoever for this bad behavior. As I have argued in several places, most of the criticism directed at Pope Leo is unjust, but even if it weren’t, no Catholic has the right to speak about him as if he were a mere politician or celebrity they dislike. In this short article from a few years back, I discuss Aquinas’s teaching that even a bad prelate has to be treated in a respectful manner, given the nature of his office: https://t.co/nTtei2nuV5
“The main, the fiercest, and the most powerful enemy of the Church is the Freemasons.
That the current flood of Protestant sects is actually the vanguard of Freemasonry is expressly acknowledged by the Masonic magazine ‘Wolna Mysl.’ They state:
‘While we reserve the right to a fully independent assessment of the internal validity of the doctrine of the national church, we can still support its struggle, as well as that of any other Protestant sect, against the supremacy of the Roman Church’…
Their goal is to ‘grant ample freedom to each, according to their own ideas and imagination, in judging the religion they profess. And after instilling indifference toward religion—which thing could not possibly be more sinister—they aim to desecrate and insult the passion of Jesus Christ with unworthy rites, to despise the Sacraments of the Church and even the mysteries of the Catholic faith, and to beat down this holy Apostolic See [Rome], against which they harbor special hatred and which they all conspire to lay to ruin by cunning, for it always retains the primacy of the apostolic chair.
The principles of their morality are wicked. They promote the pleasures of the senses, allow anyone who has failed to keep their secret to be killed, teach people that it is lawful to provoke rebellion to dethrone kings and all the rulers, who with great contempt they brazenly call tyrants…
What are these basic points [of their agenda]? Here they are: the total annihilation of the supernatural world. It is clear that at this point one can no longer speak of religion or morality.
Their great efforts to achieve that goal are clear at every step. Art, literature and magazines, theaters, cinemas, youth education, and legislation are briskly moving toward the abolition of the supernatural world and the gratification of the pleasures of the flesh…
How can we possibly counter this plague, this army of the Antichrist? The Immaculata, Mediatrix of all graces, can and wants to help us. To what purpose, otherwise, the apparitions in Lourdes, the revelation of the Miraculous Medal, by which many a person has already been converted?
A soul that is imbued with love for her will certainly oppose the work of depravity, the main weapon in the hands of Freemasonry. ‘We will not vanquish the Church by argument,’ the Freemasons declared in one of their meetings, ‘but by corrupting morals.’”
St. Maximilian Kolbe, “The Current Enemies of the Church” (October 19, 1922)
In 96 AD, the Apostle John was still alive.
Yet when a crisis erupted in Corinth, the church that wrote to fix it was in Rome.
That detail should stop every Protestant cold.
A thread.
A warning about this dangerous, cult like and unbiblical ideology-
Once Saved Always Saved is a philosophy of certainty without endurance (Matthew 24:13), a doctrine of assurance without perseverance (Hebrews 3:14), and a promise of a crown without running the race (2 Timothy 4:7–8).
It is an insidious invention of the demonic that wraps itself outwardly in a false pseudo-Christianity
If you don't understand what it truly means to sin against God, Fr. Mike Schmitz did an amazing job in this video to explain it.
This is why it is very important that we always go to confession.
To repair the relationship we have with God that was broken by sin.

J.R.R. TOLKIEN ON THE DEAD END OF PROTESTANTISM
I read this letter in the years leading up to my conversion. As I discovered, not only was Tolkien right about the mistaken search for “primitive” purity in the Church (read Scripture—it never existed), but the primitive church—to the extent we have artifacts of it in documents, archaeology, etc.—was very Catholic in its beliefs and practices. What I had been told my whole life were “medieval accretions” were widespread in the ancient Church, and defended from both Scripture, and the constant practice of the Church since the Apostolic age. The protestant claim to have restored the ancient Faith was, I discovered, completely false.
To this day, I have not yet found anything uniquely protestant in the ancient Catholic Church, except (I am sad to say) the heresies. All of them—no matter how different their doctrines from one another (and virtually none of them resembled protestantism)—ultimately relied on a novel/erroneous interpretation of Scripture (including subtracting or adding to its canon), coupled with a rejection of the authority of the Church. In this, each of them resembled protestantism. It was very sobering to realize that the Church Fathers’ descriptions of how heresy and heretics operated was disturbingly similar to how my native protestantism had operated since the 16th century.
TOLKIEN’S LETTER
The 'protestant' search backwards for 'simplicity' and directness—which, of course, though it contains some good or at least intelligible motives, is mistaken and indeed vain. Because 'primitive Christianity' is now and in spite of all 'research' will ever remain largely unknown; because 'primitiveness' is no guarantee of value, and is, and was in great a reflection of ignorance. Grave abuses were as much an element in Christian liturgical behavior from the beginning as now. (St Paul's strictures on Eucharistic behavior are sufficient to show this!)
Still more because 'my church' was not intended by Our Lord to be static or remain in perpetual childhood; but to be a living organism (likened to a plant), which develops and changes in externals by the interaction of its bequeathed divine life and history—the particular circumstances of the world into which it is set.
There is no resemblance between the 'mustard-seed' and the full-grown tree. For those living in the days of its branching growth, the Tree is the thing, for the history of a living thing is part of its life, and the history of a divine thing is sacred.
The wise may know that it began with a seed, but it is vain to try and dig it up, for it no longer exists, and the virtue and powers that it had now reside in the Tree…But they will certainly do harm if they are obsessed with the desire of going back to the seed or even to the first youth when it was (as they imagine) pretty and unafflicted by evils.
J.R.R. Tolkien, Letter to his son Michael (August 25, 1967)
The Antichrist hasn't announced himself yet. A bit preemptive to be "disappointed" in him.
Anyway, the Antichrist, of course, will just be a man. The Fathers are clear on this. (And "aliens" don't exist.) But he will announce himself via a deception/"Strong Delusion" (2 Thess 2). I believe that Deception is the very one we've been groomed for, for many decades, and which is now reaching a crescendo: the lie that ETs exist and are now here on earth to save us.
Dr. Avi Loeb is the celebrity Harvard astrophysicist and leading Ufologist who preaches that “the Messiah is coming on a UFO from an exoplanet,” and begs us to “open our minds” so that we can be “saved… by a superhuman entity” [i.e., aliens]. (He is Jewish.)
Today he announced that the White House just tasked him with establishing the U.S. Government's “UAP Science Advisory Council.”
Like seriously, if you haven't been to confession recently, today would be a beautiful day to do so. And don't worry about judgment. Just go and speak your heart to God. And you will feel so much lighter when you leave.
If my heart is ever troubled or I have a difficult decision to make, once I leave that confessional booth, the decisions are made and the burden has been lifted.
Truly, Christ's yoke is light because he can bear any burden on our behalf. And when you give your sins to the priest in Persona Christi, what you are doing is you are asking Christ to burden those sins for you, and he will just add them to his cross.
Rick - you either know or should know that Vatican II does not say “protestants are Christians.” I pray you are not deliberately trying to confuse people.
What it says is those who are “justified by faith in Baptism” have a “right to be called” Christians but to keep Faith after Baptism* one must assent to the Dogma of the Church.
So, when one rejects Dogma like Petrine Primacy, Roman Bishopric being inseparable with Petrine Primacy, Mary’s Perpetual Virginity, Transubstabtiation, etc., they don’t have Faith but are in Heresy.
If they reject these Dogma ignorantly they might simply be in “Material Heresy” meaning we use the euphemism “separated brethren.”
If they “used to be Catholic” are Baptized they are in Formal Heresy or Apostasy.
And to understand what the “Church” is requires Faith. Here’s a primer for your protestant audience:
779 The Church is both visible and spiritual, a hierarchical society and the Mystical Body of Christ. She is one, yet formed of two components, human and divine. That is her mystery, which only faith can accept.
1992 CCC
Please let me know if you’d like some Magisterial meat to go with this.
*2089 Incredulity is the neglect of revealed truth or the willful refusal to assent to it. "Heresy is the obstinate post-baptismal denial of some truth which must be believed with divine and catholic faith, or it is likewise an obstinate doubt concerning the same; apostasy is the total repudiation of the Christian faith; schism is the refusal of submission to the Roman Pontiff or of communion with the members of the Church subject to him." (1992 CCC).
