It’s a tall order to win the Northerly S. G1 over 1800m in Perth in the Summer, then head to Melbourne and land the 1200-metre Bletchingly S. G3 in the Winter. But Maurice’s 5YO son Cosmic Crusader made it look all too easy at Caulfield on Saturday. https://t.co/D7LUUdFk6J
🏇 Cosmic Crusader looked outstanding first-up, but how much substance was behind the win, and what should we take from it going forward?
📊 He returned a 100 WFA Performance Rating in the Bletchingly Stakes, just one point below the 101 peak he produced when winning the G1 Northerly Stakes over 1800m last preparation.
That’s a terrific return over 1200m, particularly for a horse we know is better over further.
⏱️ The TopRate sectionals show how he put his performance together and dominated the race:
• I 6-4 is the 600m to 400m section. He accelerated faster than the opposition (+1.4), helped by his inside position.
• I 4-2 is the 400m to 200m section. He went even faster (+2.5), accelerating more than the others and again clearly the fastest in the race.
• I L2 is the final 200m. While the others started to feel the pinch, Cosmic Crusader was still strong at +1.4L above standard.
• I L6 is the final 600m. His +5.4 was more than 5 lengths faster than the next best runner in the race.
The opposition was well below the standard he’s looking to measure up against in the spring, but he dominated them in the manner required if better races are to be realistic targets.
🎯 The G1 Memsie Stakes is his reported short-term aim and has been won with a rating between 102 and 105.5 over the past 5 years.
He still needs to improve, but a 100 first-up over 1200m, combined with his history of peaking deeper into a preparation over further, suggests he is firmly on track to beat his previous 101 peak this prep.
💡 A Group 1 win this spring is far from guaranteed, but this performance puts him right in the conversation.
Another 2YO winner!
Misato (Maurice-Etana) was a $210,000 Gold Coast Yearling Sale buy for @BelmontBldstck from the draft of @VineryStud. Congratulations to the Sherrin family.
