When ChatGPT and similar variants first exploded onto the scene, I devoted quite a few hours to aggressive experimentation to see how valuable it might be as a historical research tool..

Mixed results.. but, at the outset, several high points, and genuinely interesting finds. Since then, it's become progressively (and this is the proper word here) more neutered and worthless, in this respect.

It now refuses to so much as quote even the smallest snippets and excerpts from older historical works.. attempting to cite copyright concerns as it's reasoning - even in cases in which the works are published in full online.

It frequently interjects with long disclaimers if it's coaxed into deviating from the most politically correct (manipulatively dishonest) modern understanding of history.. it seemingly can't so much as mention a scholar or thinker whose politics differs from modern academia without a paragraph or two slandering his character or savaging his viewpoints..

So far from being a dispassionate and objective tool, it's becoming a bit like some mixture of a far-leftist professor with an unhelpful robot that loves to lecture and condescend.

Such an abomination, compared to what so many of us were promised, and the ideal we envisioned..
