When speaking with players and designing playing structures do we consider the following?

- Do players see the roles the same as us
- Do players understand the requirements of the roles
- Do players understand why we may be changing our structure based on these roles

Do we ever consider our coaching language and how it can be different for each player and each coach?

Here's an example when assigning numbers to positions in midfield & how the roles may differ between numbers.

Do our players understand what we ask of them?

These number roles play an important role in how a coach builds a playing system for players.

Tactical changes may be made with switches in role so it is key that players fully understand the demands in each role based on your ideas.

If at any point the defending team in the second half wins the ball, they then look to escape their half and counter-attack into other half. Middle zone gives space to organise before entering the other half, this is the third type of transition possible.

TRAINING IDEA
5v5v5 + 3 Counter-Attacking Play

3 teams play vs each other with support of neutral players looking to counter in 3 different situations. Team 1 starts in the 1st half they look to keep possession for 5 passes with an overload. Then look to travel into next half.

Should a team create 5 passes then score in the other half they then receive a pass in the central area and attack the other half again. Should the defending team in 1st half win possession they counter to score in that half. Then receive in central channel to attack 2nd half.

Hybrid approach allows coaches to both protect space and directly mark some opponents. May be used if the attacking team has an aerial threat. Equally a coach may wish to block runs into dangerous spaces so that his players can attack the ball cleanly to clear.

TRAINING IDEA

Image 1 we've outlined & divided the penalty area by highlighting jobs that need to be completed by the defenders within them.
When deciding on a system first the coach needs to ask themself if they wish to stop the header or whether they wish to stop a goal.

Image 3 - Zonal
Zonal approach allows a coach to strategically place players in what they deem to be danger zones, can be zones that they believe pose most threat, where they've conceded goals from previously or where opponents tend to attack
