The right to education is recognized in most constitutions. But millions still struggle to defend that right in practice.
A new @GEMReport, @GlobalNamati, and Grassroots Justice Network paper shows that education systems do not only need laws. They need accountability.

Grassroots Justice Network Academy Leadership Program participants are taking part in expert-led workshops this month to build or enhance specific skills. In the How to Recruit, Train, and Support Community Paralegals workshops, grassroots justice advocates like Liam are exploring the many reasons why someone might choose to develop a community paralegal program. As Liam explains, community paralegal programs must center the communities they seek to serve, no matter the reason behind their creation.
The Leadership Program is just the beginning of the Academy. Watch this space—we’ll continue to more offerings over the coming months!
You must be a member of the Grassroots Justice Network to join the Academy. Membership is free; sign up today: https://t.co/xoPQGiyBMX

If hate is learned, it can also be unlearned.
Education helps reduce discrimination, strengthen trust & equip people to understand & defend their rights.
It remains one of our strongest tools for building more just societies.

🎥 It's your time to shine! As part of the 2026 Voices of SDG16+ Stories for Global Action video campaign, we're inviting Network members to share their stories of best practices and extraordinary efforts to advance SDG16+ at the national and local levels.
This is the 8th edition of the campaign, which brings the work of civil society on SDG16+ to the High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development in July. This year's theme is, "Evolving, Scaling, and Flourishing Amidst Crisis: Local Voices Transforming SDG16+." Your video stories should reflect on how local civil society—the lifeblood of progress on SDG16+—is changing and transforming amidst the geopolitical moment, marked by cuts to foreign assistance, rising military spending, increasing violent conflict, and attacks on civic space and human rights.

Join our Carbon Justice Campaign to demand fair carbon projects. We believe communities must have significant decision-making power in all projects, and that carbon payments cannot be a substitute for reducing avoidable emissions. If you agree, join us.✊ https://t.co/QCJU84Nr9r

The right to education may be guaranteed by law, but that doesn't mean it's guaranteed in practice.
Severe injustices such as forced labor and marriage, disruptions to education due to conflict or criminal prosecution, race and ethnicity-based discrimination, and unsafe learning environments all keep learners out of school.
That's where legal empowerment comes in. Community paralegals can help learners know and use the law to demand fulfillment of their rights to education.

@GEMReport@GrassrootsJN
Last Thursday was the third foundational session in the Grassroots Justice Network Academy Leadership Program. More than 300 justice defenders tuned in live to learn how to make the legal empowerment cycle (know law, use law, shape law) “turn” over time.
At the beginning of the session, participants placed one word in the chat to describe the current system of laws and government—and the results were bleak. After discussing how to change those systems so that they are just, fair, and actually serving their citizens, though, the mood shifted.
This shift was largely because of @NamatiKenya’s Aisha Khagai’s inspiring presentation on how community paralegals in Kenya walk with communities to secure identity documents. Her strong message that learning and leadership can fuel a movement resonated with many of the other practitioners on the call.
