This year's report examines pressing challenges, including rising prison populations, overcrowding, organized crime in detention settings, rehabilitation and reintegration gaps, and the broader impacts of weakened rule of law on places of detention. The discussion will also explore people-centered and rights-based approaches to criminal justice reform. This includes alternatives to detention and greater attention to the voices and experiences of those directly affected by justice systems.
Pathfinders' Senior Program Officer, Laura Ospina, will contribute insights from recent research on women's access to justice in Ibero-America, developed by the Ibero-American Alliance on Access to Justice, highlighting structural drivers of women's imprisonment and the importance of gender-responsive, people-centered justice approaches.

🧐 Why would governments compete for a UN position often described as largely ceremonial?
In a new analysis from #NYUCIC, Thibault Camelli + @marani_fernando examine the rarely contested election for the @UN_PGA, and what it reveals about power, influence, and control within the #UN system. 🇺🇳
The paper argues that while the President of the General Assembly lacks formal authority, the office plays a critical role in shaping agendas, steering negotiations, and influencing outcomes across the UN. Yet it remains deliberately constrained in resources, continuity, and independence.
🌍 As debates about the future of multilateralism continue, this analysis offers fresh insights into one of the UN’s most overlooked leadership roles, and practical recommendations for strengthening it.

Earlier this month, @OHCHR organized a side event in the margins of the #STIForum 2026 on #AI + Justice Systems. 🌐
This event was co-hosted with the Permanent Missions of the Netherlands and Costa Rica to the United Nations, Pathfinders for Peaceful, Just and Inclusive Societies, and the Justice Action Coalition, and brought together member states, UN agencies, academia, civil society, and justice practitioners to examine the growing intersection of artificial intelligence (AI), AI governance, and the justice system.
⁉️ The discussion explored:
🧰 How courts are navigating AI-related disputes involving bias, privacy, judicial independence, and access to justice, while also grappling with the use of AI tools within justice institutions themselves.
⏺️ Key governance challenges around transparency, accountability, and the irreplaceability of the human judge, and the need for capacity building across the justice ecosystem on AI.
🔑 Ahead of the inaugural Global Dialogue on #AIGovernance happening in July 2026 in Geneva, Switzerland, this was a timely discussion where speakers emphasized that justice must be central to global AI governance.

📸 Snapshots from the #JusticeMatters Conference 2026 in the Hague last week!
🔵 We’re grateful to have supported the first ever High-Level Judicial Dialogue on Building People-Centered Justice Across Africa and Iberoamerica (May 6), organized by the African Alliance for People-Centered Justice and the Ibero-American Alliance for Access to Justice, in collaboration with @InnoJustice, @RedRija, @UNDP, and @UN_Women!
The discussion highlighted the critical role of judiciaries in advancing people-centered justice as foundation for stability, public trust, judicial independence and inclusive development.
💬 We heard insights by judges from Latin-America and Africa on the use of data, strengthening transparency and accountability, and integrating formal and informal justice pathways, which will help inform ongoing efforts within both regional alliances and the broader justice community.
🤔 What does it look like when justice delivers real stability on the ground?
🚀 @marani_fernando, Program Director of Justice, Inclusion, and Equality, also moderated a plenary session on practical examples—aimed at making a convincing case for the role that access to justice can play in ensuring stability in diverse situations.
Finally, Pathfinders co-sponsored the “From Legal Equality to Justice for Women and Girls” event, organized by UN Women and @IDLO.
💡 The event brought together perspectives from governments, international organizations, civil society, and justice sector practitioners to highlight practical pathways for reform. There was a unique focus on coordinated approaches to removing discriminatory laws, strengthening gender-responsive justice services, advancing women’s leadership and participation in justice institutions, and mobilizing sustainable financing to support long-term change.
