I am so grateful to consultants who are cheerfully willing to see patients.
I feel so bad sometimes when I call them because I know they are overworked and busy.
But thank you, thank you thank you to all those of you out there who are a delight to work with.
I do not use the word "Obesity"in my charts and I delete it from patient problem lists.
I also delete "Overweight" and "Noncompliant" and any other motherfudging judgmental labels I find.
I use "larger bodied" person Because everything I have read from fat activists suggests that if you cannot ask the person what they prefer to be called it is safer to say larger or bigger bodied.
Fat activists prefer to be called fat.
I have been studying body size stigma for over 40 years.
Stigmatizing or shaming somebody for being larger bodied or fat is as malevolent as racism.
Some even say it is the same as racism.
did you know that Medicare pays hospitals more money if doctors use the term "morbidly obese" to describe people with BMI over 40?
I refuse to do this.
