Last season, Javonte Williams had 58 targets in Sean Payton's offense. Now, two years removed from a gruesome knee injury all the training camp talk is buzzing around Williams and how he looks and feels.
Semaje Perine was let go, vacating another 56 RB targets in the Bronco's offense. Williams should be a guy in for an expanded role in the passing game this season.
Head coach Sean Payton had this to say about him in early August:
“Generally speaking though, part of the pass protection is understanding protections and being smart,” Payton said. “The other part is physicality and ‘one-two’ and technique. I think we’re going to see a little bit more here in the next two weeks with some live reps and it’s really going to reveal itself.
“Perine gives you kind of that flexibility because he not only can he protect, but he’s a viable receiver. I think [of] Javonte the same way.”
Sean Payton led offenses have been top 5 in RB targets and no team last season targeted them more. Some RB's to have excellent seasons receiving under Sean Payton include Mark Ingram (50+ rec 3x), Darren Sproles, Alvin Kamara.
Williams should have the stark advantage over Jaleel McLaughlin based on his ability to pass protect here as Jaleel struggled heavily with it last season.
Additionally, a rookie QB gets the start here in Bo Nix. Nix comes from a gimmicky Oregon offense that excelled at qucik easy throws and YAC and it's likely Payton will want to get some easy throws out there for Nix. The Bronco's lack pass catching options outside of Courtland Sutton with Josh Reynolds and Marvin Mims next in line.
The Seahawks defensive scheme will be re-vamped this year under Arden Durde so it remains to be seen how they will play. However hard to pass up on one of these backs in an offense that should be predicated on getting the ball in the hands of its two RB's with Perine gone now.

- Whether he's matched up with Jrue Holiday (12 matchup minutes across 3 games) or Jaylen Brown (8 matchup minutes across 2 games), Mitchell is often guarding the wing. With that, he's been able to grab easy weak-side boards.
