Honestly, calling them just sunglasses misses the point. They’re made from a special material called ruby-quartz, which is strong enough to stop his blasts without breaking. It works because his mind can connect with that material in a way that helps control his powers. So they’re not just normal glasses that somehow survive his blasts. They were basically made for him.

The reason he needs them is because he had a head injury as a kid that made it hard for him to control his blasts. His eyelids can stop the blasts when his eyes are closed, but he obviously can’t walk around with his eyes shut all day. So it’s not really about weak glasses somehow holding back a laser. The glasses were simply made to work with his powers.

everyone loves to say rachel should’ve gone deeper into the mental health and player welfare side of things but then get mad when she does… because i can’t think of a more damning examination of the culture of the nhl than writing a professional hockey player that dies by suicide, and the only two players who attend his funeral are a man who didn’t know him and a man solely known for fighting him. i also can’t think of a better signifier of ilya’s character than missing the all star game (his one chance to play on the same team as the man he secretly loves) to attend the funeral of a man he never knew.
