Weather warnings for freezing rain and icy surfaces are in place across several areas of northern Europe, including the north of the Netherlands, parts of Germany and the Czech Republic. While it may appear similar to ordinary rain, freezing rain is one of the most disruptive and dangerous winter weather phenomena.

What makes freezing rain so hazardous?
Freezing rain forms when precipitation begins as snow in cold upper layers of the atmosphere, melts into rain while passing through a warmer layer aloft, and then falls into a shallow sub-zero layer near the surface. The raindrops become supercooled and freeze instantly upon contact with roads, trees, power lines and other exposed surfaces.

• A cold layer aloft where snow forms
• A pronounced warm layer above freezing, causing complete melting

This vertical temperature structure – warm air sandwiched between colder layers – is a classic freezing-rain setup and cannot be identified from surface temperatures alone.
