story of how my little sister almost accidentally outed me to our mom (AND MYSELF?) when we were in middle school:

i realized i was attracted to more than just guys when i was 12 years old. I had notebooks full - FULL - of drawings of women. They were SFW ofc but i was obsessed with drawing women. Women were just naturally more attractive to me than guys - though i still found guys attractive. But being a 6th grader with no access to the internet and being raised by a rural Texan woman, i didn't have the words i needed for how I felt.

i knew what a lesbian was, but i also had a crush on this guy in my class, so there was no way i was gay. i had NO IDEA other sexualities existed. I had NO IDEA other genders existed.

Fast forward to a random saturday. My 10 yo sister and I were in a spat. I was in my room, on my bed, with the door open (drawing hot ladies, ofc) and she was down the hall in the living room and we were just bickering loudly back and forth over something stupid. My mom was doing laundry in the laundry room which was in between my bedroom and the living room.

out of nowhere, my sister just yells "OH YEAH? WELL - WELL I BET MOM DOESN'T KNOW YOU'RE A LESBIAN!"

it was so sudden that i was just like shocked still and i looked down at the really hot lady i was drawing and i just started laughing. My mom got quiet in the laundry room and she came into my room and was like "honey, do we need to have a conversation?"

and i tried to tell her that no, I'm not a lesbian and after a moment she very hesitantly said something like "well if you ever decide you like women instead of men - or if you're bisexual and like women AND men - then just know that's okay and i'll always love you and whoever you decide to love."

it was super mind altering in 2 ways. First - hats off to my mom. She had the perfect response to me, way more perfect than I'd ever could've expected from her and she never once pushed to know my sexuality. And she's maintained that love and acceptance to this day. Secondly - i didn't know being attracted to women AND men were an option.

i realized right then and there as she walked out that i was bisexual.

And then later, as I went through high school and college and learned more about gender identities and sexualities, I realized that peoples' genitals don't really matter that much to me and I could be happy sexually with any adult my personality meshes with, regardless of what's going on under their clothes.

Also, my mom was not surprised when i finally told her as a 28 yo woman that i was pansexual. Mom, if you're reading this, thank you for being the best mom I could've had that day.
