Yankari Game Reserve has the largest herd of #elephants in #Nigeria . Poaching for ivory has reduced but conflict with farmers on the edge of Yankari is growing. Reducing this conflict, and providing benefits for local people, is key to the elephants recovery.

Forest elephants are key seed dispersers, essential to maintaining healthy forests. Without them, the very composition of the forest would change. In Nigeria, small groups of forest elephants are found in 7 different sites but are declining. Classified as critically endangered.

The bushbuck is a shy & solitary antelope of the forest edge, almost always found close to water. Widely distributed in Nigeria in both forest & savanna, probably Nigeria’s most common & widespread antelope, although populations are declining due to habitat loss & hunting.

There’s a clear connection between clean water, healthy people, and healthy forests and wildlife. With support from @USAIDNigeria, we rehabilitated 9 boreholes in 5 communities around Yankari Game Reserve, which will benefit about 4,000 people.

The Cross River gorilla is Africa’s rarest ape. Previously thought to be extinct, it was ‘rediscovered’ in the late 1980’s. Now, a precious 300 individuals remain, living in remote areas of Nigeria and Cameroon. 🦍⛰️

In the Mbe mountains of Southern Nigeria, nine local communities work together, with the support of @WCS_Nigeria, to protect this critically endangered species for future generations. Introducing the ‘Gorilla Guardians’, an initiative that has grown to include 16 eco-guards from these local communities, conducting daily anti-poaching and gorilla-monitoring patrols. Some of them, like Jacob Osang, are ex-hunters, channeling their knowledge and experience now to record signs of human activity and ward off threats from hunters, illegal loggers, and those who are harvesting non-timber forest products unsustainably.

This team’s unwavering commitment to the Cross River gorilla, Nigeria’s endangered species, and to future generations is an inspiration. Their story is a call to action, and a compelling narrative that can encourage us all to take steps to protect our wildlife heritage 🌍
