Prairie dogs may have one of the most specific alarm systems we've found in a mammal. And we probably missed it for so long because we weren't listening closely enough.

Con Slobodchikoff, an animal behaviorist at Northern Arizona University, spent decades recording and analyzing Gunnison's prairie dog alarm calls. What he found was wild: the calls don't seem to just mean "danger." They appear to carry details about what kind of danger is coming.

A coyote doesn't get the same call as a human. A fast-moving threat may not get the same call as a slow one. In some experiments, the calls even seemed to change with the size, shape, and color of the intruder.

The color experiment is the one that stuck with people. Researchers had humans in different colored shirts walk through prairie dog colonies, then recorded the alarm calls. The calls for blue shirts and yellow shirts were acoustically different enough to suggest the prairie dogs were encoding something about color.

Does that mean prairie dogs have language the way humans do? That's still debated, and it's easy to get carried away with anthropomorphizing them.

But these animals are communicating more specific information about the world than people used to give them credit for.
