A seemingly routine click by a Namibian Defence Force captain based in Okahandja may have opened the door to a cyberattack that has resulted in the leakage of a large volume of military-related confidential information on the internet.

The identity of the captain is known to NBC News.

NBC News investigations have established that files appearing to originate from systems connected to the NDF are circulating online following a ransomware claim against the Namibian military.

The leaked directory contains folders labelled ��Commander”, “Defence”, “Military”, “Financials” and “Personal”, alongside documents and other files.

The circumstances surrounding the breach are still being investigated, but information gathered by NBC News points to a possible compromise involving a captain stationed in Okahandja.

According to information available to NBC News, the officer may have unknowingly clicked on a malicious link and potentially given attackers an avenue into a system or account connected to the military.

NDF spokesperson Colonel Shilumbu had not responded to questions put to him by NBC at the time of publication.
