One species of turtle in Florida has over 350 other species dependent on it.

Gopher tortoises dig burrows up to 40 feet long and 10 feet deep. The burrows maintain stable temperature and humidity year-round, survive wildfires from above, and flood only partially during storms.

They are refuges, and more than 350 species use them.

Eastern indigo snakes, gopher frogs, burrowing owls, Florida mice, dozens of snake species, hundreds of invertebrates.

Some species exist only because gopher tortoises exist. The Florida mouse can't make its own burrow and must attach to a tortoise's.

The gopher tortoise has been doing this work for 60 million years.

Development, road mortality, and fire suppression have pushed the species to threatened status. Every subdivision built in Florida sandhills paves over burrows that were housing hundreds of other animals each.

Save a gopher tortoise and you save an entire underground ecosystem.
