The Great Conversation — a lecture on how technologists shape history by Matthew Jordan
Matthew is a historian of AI at Princeton University, the former Executive Director of @joininteract, and a prolific writer and thinker on the history of technology.
He is also a “Toronto TikTok history sensation” — the founder of Hidden Rivers, a Toronto-based tour guiding company with dozens of sold out tours every summer.
The day before his lecture, Matthew will host a private walking tour and lunch open exclusively to Patron Ticket holders, joined by our sponsors and publishing partners.
Come experience 12,000 years of Toronto’s history. Walk the largest ravine system in the world. And see the city of Toronto in a new light.

How do you film scent?
I focused on capturing the process behind scent , the chemicals, the study and the intention rather than trying to recreate scent visually
Removing colour as part of the image and focusing visually on the process alone
Shot this on a Sony FX3 at 120 FPS, slowed to 24 FPS
using a Sony G Master 2 90mm f/2.8
Graded on Davinci Resolve
trying to exit one of the worst depressive episodes in my life and it’s not easy, trying to do more with what i know
it’s excruciatingly slow and the depression makes most days feel like i’ve hit a plateau and there’s no way up
started a log of what i did right and what helped yesterday even if it was just a few minutes, today is the second day where i see a sliver of light
when trying doesn’t work it reminds me of that part in Undone where Alma’s dad tells her: “Try, but not try-try. Try not to try.”
learning a lot
thank you for everything
Spent the day playing with a new idea. I think it's nothing.
I'm not giving up on "What if Factorio was a cellular automaton in a shader" but this just ain't it.
