During the Rhodesian Bush War, the Rhodesian Special Air Service (SAS) operated in small four-man teams, carrying out deep-penetration reconnaissance, sabotage, and cross-border raids against insurgent bases in Zambia, Mozambique, and Botswana.

The Rhodesian SAS became one of Rhodesia's most experienced special operations units, earning a reputation for conducting long-range counter-insurgency missions throughout the Bush War.
