Then in 2023 I did the thing I had no business doing. Crossed the Atlantic solo, Monaco to the British Virgin Islands. Just me, the boat and a great deal of sky (and luck). From a bloke who couldn't sail a few years earlier. I'll be dining out on that one for life.

At 54, most blokes are easing off. I went the other way. I sold what I needed to, stopped postponing, and bought a brand new Beneteau Oceanis 45 straight off the line, picked her up in Antibes. Named her Alegria. Spanish for joy. I had no idea how to sail her yet. That was 15 years ago.

What followed: the Amalfi Coast, Sicily and Malta, the Greek islands, Corsica, Sardinia, the Balearics, Turkey, Croatia. Still sailing.
