This morning, from JWC Stavanger, I convened a virtual round table with all 32 NATO Chiefs of Defence to receive a briefing by SACEUR on the evolving situation in the Middle East and its potential implications for our collective security, in the wake of #Iran’s continued and indiscriminate attacks across the region and beyond.
The discussion followed NATO’s successful interception of a ballistic missile launched from Iran and targeting #Türkiye.
Within minutes, #NATO forces identified the threat, confirmed its trajectory, alerted missile defence systems and launched an interceptor to defeat it.
This is a clear demonstration that the #Alliance is well postured to defend Allied populations against ballistic threats.
In response to the evolving security environment, SACEUR has heightened NATO’s ballistic missile defence posture.
This adjustment underscores the Alliance’s ability to react swiftly, decisively and collectively to emerging threats.
Addressing the CHODs, SACEUR also highlighted the vital need to stay the course and increase speed when it comes to defence investments, our defence industrial base, and NATO’s support to #Ukraine.
NATO’s strength lies in its unity, its readiness and its ability to adapt. The Alliance remains vigilant, responsive and resolute in protecting Allied territory, populations and forces.

The Munich Security Conference 2026 once again proves its institutional value: a unique, needed forum where allies, partners, military leaders, industry, and experts compare assessments and align understanding of the security environment.
The Munich Security Report underlines how today’s challenges are interconnected, more than ever: military threats, hybrid activities, economic pressure, and societal resilience all affect our collective security.
And the answer cannot be anything else but a renewed transatlantic link - along strong partnerships - with fair, shared burden and responsibilities, because #WeAreNATO and we are #StrongerTogether.
Against this backdrop, very pleased about a series of high-level bilateral meetings and participation in the #MSC2026 panel "Destructive Ambiguity: Deterring and Countering Hybrid Warfare".
My message was straightforward: #NATO is and will remain a defensive Alliance, but defence today cannot be passive.
We must exploit every possibility available to us, within the rules and in line with our values, to anticipate, expose and counter hostile actions early.
Being proactive is not escalation. Often it is what prevents escalation, saves lives, and helps protect the one billion people the Alliance is committed to defend.
