We really need to talk about our car import taxes, because at this point it’s daylight robbery dressed up as revenue collection. Take a simple example: a 2018 Honda Fit in Japan goes for around 460k- 480k. Land it in Kenya, and the same car sells for roughly 1.45–1.6M for standard used imports, or up to 1.93M for low mileage or hybrid units. Why? Because the taxes slapped on imported cars are not just highthey’re punitive:
•Import Duty: 25%
•Excise Duty: 20%
•VAT: 16%
•RDL + IDF
•Plus inspection, port fees, and clearing costs.
By the time all these layers of taxation settle, you end up paying more in taxes than the actual value of the car. A car shouldn’t cost more in taxes than it cost to manufacture. A country where owning a basic car requires taking a loan plus a prayer is not progressing, it’s failing its people. This system needs fixing.
