Gor Mahia did not lose to Pyramids FC because of one bad night. They lost because the warning signs were already visible in their recruitment.

You cannot expect to compete at the highest continental level while making transfers that barely improve the squad, signing players who struggle to raise the level, and filling positions without properly addressing quality.

Gor’s recruitment has looked more like squad maintenance than building a team capable of challenging Africa’s best. Some of the players brought in may be good enough for the domestic game, but continental football demands a different standard — pace, physicality, technical quality, decision-making and experience under pressure.

Pyramids exposed that gap brutally.

The 7-1 aggregate defeat should therefore not simply be blamed on tactics or individual mistakes. It should force Gor to question how they identify, assess and sign players.

If the ambition is to compete in Africa, recruitment must match that ambition. You cannot buy ordinary and expect extraordinary in continental football.
